Some of the most important progress you make on placement is easy to miss.
It may be the moment you notice a change in a patient sooner than you would have a few weeks ago. The time you stop and ask for help before acting. A clearer handover. A better question. A conversation handled with more care.
The Progress You Don’t Always See is a free 30-page reflective placement journal for UK pre-registration student nurses. It is designed to help you notice those quieter changes in your practice and understand what they say about the nurse you are becoming.
This is not a book of forced positivity and it is not a competency checklist. Difficult shifts belong here too. The aim is to reflect accurately: what happened, what you noticed, where you needed support, what feedback changed and what you understand differently now.
Inside the journal
- What progress can look like beyond completing procedures
- Why confidence and competence are not the same thing
- How to turn feedback into something you can actually use
- How to reflect on difficult days without pretending they were a “win”
- Realistic student nurse scenarios that bring reflection back to practice
- Journal pages for conversations, asking for help, clinical reasoning and person-centred care
- A weekly evidence page to help you notice patterns in your development
- An end-of-placement reflection and letter to the student who arrived on day one
The journal is grounded in current Nursing and Midwifery Council standards and guidance on professional practice, student supervision, feedback and reflection.
For: UK pre-registration student nurses in all fields and stages of training.
Format: Free 30-page digital placement journal.
Please remember: Keep patients, families, staff and placement areas unidentifiable in anything you write. This journal does not replace your university PAD/ePAD, formal assessment documentation, placement support routes or local procedures. If something concerns safety, wellbeing or the learning environment, use the appropriate university or placement route rather than relying on private reflection alone.
