A Student Nurse’s Story of Mentorship, Chaos & Becoming Seen

Bleepbook was born from a single truth.....

“I got to see this because someone believed in me.”

Through the chaos of placements, proficiencies and pressure, I’ve been lucky to be mentored by amazing nurses - the ones who mostly said yes and when it was a no, they explained why (even if it was as simple as “students aren’t allowed, but you can observe”).

  • They made space for questions.
  • They shared their knowledge.
  • They treated me like a future nurse, not just a student.
  • And that changed everything.

But I also know what it feels like to walk in on Day One with your stomach in knots.

  • To be terrified of saying the wrong thing.
  • To worry that asking a question will make you look stupid.
  • To feel like everyone else is miles ahead.
  • To witness your first death and not know how to process it.
  • To have your first real patient conversation and feel something shift inside you.
  • To meet a patient who’s truly grateful and suddenly everything makes sense.
  • To quietly cry in the toilet.
  • To laugh at 3am during night shift delirium.
  • To feel completely lost and then find your feet, little by little.

🌱 Learning the Hard Way and Sharing the Journey

I’ve never had it all figured out, just a notebook in my pocket, a head full of questions and a quiet determination to learn as much as I can. I’ve learned that asking, “Can I observe this? OR Can I help?” opens doors you never expected, even if the answer isn’t always yes. Placements aren’t just hands on experience; they’re part of uni and doing your research can make everything click. Believe it or not, but even when you feel lost, unsure or like you’re asking too much, that’s usually the moment you’re growing the most.

Bleepbook is just me trying to turn that messy, emotional, incredible journey into something that might help someone else feel a little more seen.

📚 What Is Bleepbook

This isn’t just a nursing resource site. It’s a companion through the scary bits, the proud moments and the “is it just me?” spirals. It’s placement packs, handbooks, cheat sheets and real talk written like a student.

It’s the reflection guide that gets you, the anatomy summary that doesn’t give you a headache and the little voice that reminds you: “You’re not failing. You’re just learning.”

Bleepbook is for the students who care too much, feel everything and want to be good, not just at tasks, but at being human in the role of a nurse.

It’s about celebrating the small wins, even if they don’t feel like much, because every step matters, even if no one else sees it. It’s about celebrating other students, too, lifting each other up, sharing kindness and remembering that not everyone is having a good day. Some days you’ll shine. Other days, you’ll be the person who helps someone else shine. This is a space for both.

🩵 And if you're struggling right now...

Whether it's stress from placement, things going on at home, feeling like you’re not good enough or just the pressure of trying to keep up, you're not alone, you’re not imagining it. It really is hard. And no, you’re not the only one finding it overwhelming, even if no one else is saying it out loud.

  • It doesn't mean you're failing.
  • It doesn’t mean you’re not meant to be a nurse.
  • It just means you're in the middle of figuring it out and that part's messy for everyone.

So keep going. Ask the questions. Take the notes. Cry if you need to, then get up and keep learning. You’re doing better than you think. And it’s okay to take it one shift at a time.

Bleepbook is here for all of it, the wobble, the wins and everything in between.
